This course will immerse students in the process and theory of developing a work for performance, emphasizing collaborative ensemble work and using an approach that integrates improvisation, field research, character creation, playwriting and directing. It will highlight the interdisciplinary approach employed by one of New York's most acclaimed theatres, The New Group, and take as its models the “improvised play” of playwright/filmmaker Mike Leigh (whom The New Group has frequently produced) and the Joint Stock work of Max Stafford-Clark, Caryl Churchill and David Hare, as well as American equivalents in the collaborations of Joseph Chaiken and Sam Shepard and the Steppenwolf Theatre Company. Students will have the opportunity to go through the steps of creating an original dramatic script and performance under the guidance of New Group founder and Artistic Director Scott Elliott (Gallatin ’93), Associate Artistic Director/dramaturg Ian Morgan, and New Group artists such as Wallace Shawn, Derek McLane, and Ethan Hawke.
