Cris Beam is the author of Transparent: Love, Family and Living the T with Transgender Teenagers (Harcourt, 2007), which won a Lambda Literary Award and was a Stonewall Honor Book. Her second book, I Am J, is a young adult novel slated to be released from Little, Brown in March 2011, and she is currently working on a book about foster care in the U.S. for Houghton Mifflin-Harcourt. Her work has appeared in many national magazines as well as on the public radio program This American Life . Beam teaches beginning and advanced creative nonfiction writing courses at Gallatin, as well as a course on family memoir, and her research interests are in gender and LGBT studies, urban subcultures, urban poverty and social justice, prison writing and madness. In addition to NYU, Beam also teaches at Columbia University, The New School and Bayview Women’s Correctional Facility in New York.
