Dean's Graduate Scholarships

The Dean's Graduate Scholarships provide support for outstanding Gallatin MA students pursuing innovative, individualized concentrations that investigate questions and themes within four broad areas of interdisciplinary academic inquiry.  Dean's Scholars are selected based on their previous academic record, the strength and promise of their proposed course of study, and their potential to contribute to the kinds of interdisciplinary conversations and engaged intellectual work that epitomizes the Gallatin ethos.

Victoria Carter

Victoria Carter moved to New York from London, where she spent several years working as a digital and innovation consultant.  During this time, Victoria began to think about how design and innovation could be used as tools for sustainable socio-economic change.  Victoria graduated from the University of Nottingham with a BA in English and her wide-ranging experiences and interdisciplinary background have informed her desire to study at Gallatin.  While at Gallatin, she will combine her interest in socio-economic, political, and spatial theory with her background in design to think about how cultural diversity and creativity can contribute to building sustainable societies and empowered communities.

Michael Imasua

Whether as a scholar, activist, organizer, or leader, Michael Imasua has always sought to personify the change he wants to see in the world.  As an undergraduate at Gonzaga Univeristy, Michael studied Political Science.  For the past several years, he has been engaging in multiple capacities with the questions and issues that matter to him most, whether that be through his work with the Institute for Civic Engagement and Democracy (at Miami Dade College), the Center for Community Engagement (at Saint Thomas University), or through his work with NGOs, like Service For Peace and Minds On Africa.  As a graduate student at Gallatin, Michael studies global security and development, focusing on the relationship between institutions and peacebuilding in sub-Saharan Africa.

Kiana Sosa

Kiana Sosa earned a BA in Africana Studies with a minor in Theater from Hamilton College.  She spent most of her undergraduate career dividing her time between social activism and the performing arts.  Upon graduating from Hamilton College in 2015, Kiana was awarded the William J. Bristol Fellowship to pursue an independent project entitled “Hip-Hop Theatre: Self-Expression, Activism, and Solidarity Among Youth in England, Italy, Ghana, and South Africa.”  As her research developed, Kiana discovered that she was passionate about finding ways to incorporate Hip-Hop aesthetics and theater arts into curriculum design for students from disadvantaged communities.  At Gallatin, Kiana wants to develop a Hip-Hop Theatre pedagogy inspired by playwright and actor Lin Manuel Miranda.

Careina Yard

Careina Yard is an educator, filmmaker, screenwriter, and photographer.  After graduating summa cum laude with a BS in Criminal Justice from St. John's University, her vocational pursuits shifted to education.  While completing her MSEd at St. John's, Careina worked at a foster care agency as a social worker and later transitioned into a position as an education specialist.  This experience significantly impacted her perspective on the educational system in urban environments.  At Gallatin, Careina is taking courses in urban studies, psychology, education, and film, paying special attention to how the educational system affects African American communities.  Her thesis will be a documentary film that examines the harsh realities faced by disadvantaged communities as they navigate the public school system.
