Students must maintain continuous matriculation every academic year until graduation. Typically, this is achieved by enrolling in courses in the Fall and Spring semesters. Students who do not register for courses must register to Maintain Matriculation (K47.4747) in order to maintain their active status in the University.
While registered to Maintain Matriculation, students are allowed to work with their advisers and to register for the following semester without applying for readmission. Additionally, students who Maintain Matriculation are allowed access to Bobst Library, NYU Home, and entry to most buildings.
Students may register to Maintain Matriculation if they do not register for courses in a particular Fall or Spring semester. Registering to Maintain Matriculation is not required over the Summer semester.*
Students who are unable to register due to medical or other serious personal circumstances may apply for an approved Leave of Absence. For further information about taking an official Leave of Absence, please visit Gallatin’s Office of Student Affairs at 1 Washington Place, 5th floor. Consult the Gallatin Bulletin for more information.
* Students who complete the Colloquium by the September or January graduation deadlines do not need to register to Maintain Matriculation in the following Fall or Spring semester.
NB: If you are dropping “for credit” courses and adding “Maintain Matriculation,” you are advised to complete this registration activity prior to the first day of classes to avoid any financial penalties. Registration fees will not be refunded after the start of classes; if a student drops all her classes and then registers for a Maintenance of Matriculation she will not be refunded any registration fees. Please contact the Bursar’s Office for more information.
International students (students with F1 and J1 visas) are required to be full-time students every semester; this means they must complete at least 12 credits per semester. If an international student needs a semester off, s/he must first contact the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS), then contact Patrick McCreery in Gallatin’s Global Studies Department at (212) 998-7320. International students may not register to Maintain Matriculation without the permission of both offices.
During the semester in which a student is registered to Maintain Matriculation: 1) he or she is not eligible to receive financial aid; and 2) student loan repayments may become due. If a student receives financial aid (loans, grants, and scholarships), he or she should contact the Office of Financial Aid to learn more about financial aid ramifications.
Students are not eligible to live in University housing during the semester in which they are registered to Maintain Matriculation. For more information, contact the Department of University Housing.
A dependent enrolled in a parent or guardian’s health insurance plan may become ineligible for this insurance while registered to Maintain Matriculation, as the student is not full-time. Contact the insurer directly to determine eligibility requirements. Students enrolled in an NYU student health insurance plan who want to continue coverage while registered to Maintain Matriculation should contact the Student Health Insurance Services Office.
If you have any questions regarding any of these policies, please contact the Office of Advising at 1 Washington Place, 5th floor, (212) 998-7320 and ask to speak to an adviser.
