Financial aid for study away exists in many forms: federal aid; scholarships based on financial need, merit, family heritage/ethnicity, and even special criteria like being left-handed; fundraising; and loans.
In addition, several Gallatin fellowships and awards and non-NYU fellowships support study, research, and internships abroad for current and graduated students. Note, however, that these fellowships and awards may not be used to cover expenses associated with Gallatin's travel courses.
NYU Abu Dhabi offers undergraduate research and art apprenticeship opportunities that can come with up to $3,000 in funding.
Interested students are advised to search and apply early. Deadlines can fall as early as a semester to a year in advance of program start dates. In many instances, students can apply for aid before being admitted to a study abroad program.
The NYU Office of Financial Aid offers aid based on financial need, academic merit, or both for many NYU study away programs, including NYU Summer Financial Aid. The Office of Financial Aid provides information about other NYU scholarships and awards for NYU study away, including the Global Pathways Scholarship (available only for semester study at NYU's global academic centers).
IMPORTANT: NYU Summer Financial Aid requires enrollment in at least 6 credits during the summer term. To meet the minimum Summer Aid requirement, students in Gallatin's 4-credit summer travel courses may take another course during the summer term as long as it does not overlap with the travel course. Please review the NYU Summer Financial Aid page for more information.
The Gallatin Dean’s Scholarship is a need-based award available for Gallatin January Term and Summer travel courses. Eligibility:
The following students will receive priority consideration: continuing students who will apply the course credit towards their degree requirements; students with advanced class standing; students who have not received a Gallatin Dean's Scholarship in the past.
The Gallatin Dean's Scholarship awards up to $5,500. All funding is posted as tuition credit to the recipient’s NYU student account. Scholarships are awarded based on the availability of funds. The amount awarded will reflect the total amount that can be received from both Gallatin and NYU's Office of Financial Aid for the term. Note that financial aid for summer study away, even from non-NYU sources, can be limited, so awardees should anticipate covering the remaining costs of the program without additional aid.
IMPORTANT: If students receive NYU Summer Aid (see above), this aid amount may be reduced if awarded the Dean’s Scholarship; talk to a financial aid counselor for details.
Students apply for the Dean's Scholarship when submitting the Gallatin travel course application.
Summer Travel Courses: Feb. 1
Students are encouraged to apply by the priority deadline, as funding may be limited or unavailable after that date.
Dean's Scholarship recipients will be required to share their experiences on the program. Examples include blogging for Gallatin Global’s blog site and giving a brief presentation to students at a Gallatin Global information session.
