Fall & Summer Individualized Project  Proposals

Checklist

Complete the following several weeks before the submission deadline (early March for summer proposals/late March for fall proposals)

Complete the following several weeks before the submission deadline (late October/early November)

Consult the Gallatin website for policy and information on designing your individualized studies, Independent Study and Tutorial.

 Discuss your plans with your academic adviser.

Identify and contact the faculty member with whom you would like to work.

Work with the faculty member to develop the components of your study, including the description, syllabus and booklist.

Complete the following several weeks before the submission deadline (mid-March for summer proposals/mid-April for fall proposals)

Complete the Independent Study or Tutorial proposal form and attach all required components. After you submit it, your proposal will automatically be sent to your advising and grading instructor.  If you are planning a tutorial, at least two proposals must be submitted before the tutorial can be reviewed by the committee.

A few days after you submit the form, follow up with your adviser and grading instructor to make sure they received your proposal.

Confirm with your adviser and instructor that they have submitted their approval to Gallatin.  If you are planning a tutorial you should also confirm that at least two members have submitted proposals.

If you have not received confirmation of approval from both your adviser and instructor or if there are any issues that will prevent the submission of your proposal (with all required components) by the deadline, contact Kathe Ann Joseph as soon as possible. Do not wait until the submission deadline to notify Gallatin of problems.

Email correspondence from Kathe Ann Joseph informing you of the committee’s decision on your proposal. If approved, the email will contain the registration codes and instructions you will need to register on Albert.

If your proposal is approved - You must register before you can begin working with the instructor.

If your proposal is not approved – Be prepared to take the alternate course you discussed with your academic adviser.

If you decide to cancel your project – Notify Kathe Ann Joseph and the grading instructor as soon as possible.
