A part-time member of the Gallatin faculty since 2001, Carol Zoref teaches fiction writing in the Advanced Writing Program. She has been a full-time member of the Sarah Lawrence College faculty since 1998. She has been awarded fellowships and grants from the Virginia Center for Creative Arts, Hall Farm Center for Arts, and In Our Own Write. Her novel Barren Island (New Issues, 2017) won the Goldberg Prize for Debut Fiction, the AWP Prize for the Novel, National Jewish Book Award, the Harold U. Ribalow Prize for Fiction, and was longlisted for the National Book Award for Fiction.

Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching

Barren Island Wins the 2018 Harold U. Ribalow Prize for Fiction

Carol Zoref is the recipient of the 2018 Harold U. Ribalow Prize for Fiction for her novel Barren Island.

Recent News

Professor Carol Zoref's novel Barren Island (New Issues, 2017) was named the winner of the 2018 Harold U. Ribalow/Hadassah Award for Fiction. Prior winners include Jonathan Safran Foer, Edith Perlman, and Nathan Englander. Zoref will be honored at an award ceremony on January 31, 2018.

Since its publication, Barren Island has been honored with a 2018 Goldberg Prize for Debut Fiction from the Jewish Book Council’s National Jewish Book Awards and included in the 2017 National Book Awards for Fiction Long List. The novel was selected by Paul Harding as the winner of the 2015 Associated Writing Programs Novel Award.
