Charles Gelman earned his PhD from the Department of Comparative Literature at NYU in 2019 with a concentration in modern European intellectual history and earned an advanced certificate from NYU’s Program in Poetics and Theory. His research and teaching interests are primarily modern European intellectual history, the history of philosophy, political and social theory, and psychoanalysis. He has a particular interest in German intellectuals in the early twentieth century and is currently working on a book manuscript based on his dissertation, The Extremist: Walter Benjamin and the Radical Critique of Society, 1912-1924. His translations of essays by Louis Althusser, Walter Benjamin, and Jacques Derrida have appeared in Décalages, Barricade, and Law and Literature, respectively . An essay of his will appear in the forthcoming volume Forces of Education: Walter Benjamin and the Politics of Pedagogy (Bloomsbury, 2022).
