Ph.D., Rhetoric, University of California, Berkeley, 2012

Prior to joining Gallatin, Diana Anders earned her Ph.D. in Rhetoric with a Designated Emphasis on Gender Studies from the University of California at Berkeley. She has taught interdisciplinary courses on analytical writing and research, gender studies, political theory, humanitarianism, collective trauma and healing, and war crimes tribunals. Dr. Anders’ research and teaching lies at the intersections of theory and practice and examines juridical, social, political, and cultural responses to different forms of collective suffering, especially as linked to armed conflict and gender-based violence; This includes retributive/legal modalities, reparations, truth and reconciliation commissions, and more communal/traditional recovery methods utilized in different contexts around the world. Her academic work and pedagogy are deeply informed by her background in gender and queer studies, political theory, as well as trauma studies, which also—more recently—serve as the foundation for her private consulting work on gender and equality policy making.
