Step 5: Registering for Classes

Before You Register

You may have already completed some of the steps below, so use this like a checklist to make sure that you are ready to register.

NYU students are required to enter Emergency Contact Information which includes a cell phone number and an emergency contact. You will not be able to register or use Albert until this information has been are entered.

You should also confirm that your personal information (i.e. your address) listed on Albert is accurate. You can update information that is incorrect directly in your Student Center.

The University blocks registration for students who are not in compliance with certain regulations (i.e., state immunization regulations), who owe an outstanding balance, etc., by placing a hold on the student's record.

There are also standard registration holds that are placed on a student's records each term prior to the registration period.

As a first-year student, you should only have the standard "Adviser Approval Required" registration; This hold will be removed by the Gallatin Office of Student Services after your adviser approves your First Year Plan of Study (see below).

You may also see a "Financially Cleared" notation in the hold section. This just means you do not have an account balance and you do not need to worry about this hold.

You can view all holds by checking the "Holds" tab in your Student Center on Albert. If a hold appears, click on "details" and follow the instructions provided to resolve otherwise, you will not be able to register. A hold can take more than a day to resolve so it is best to check for them well in advance of your registration appointment time.

It is also a good idea to check the “To Do List” tab in your student center for messages from the Office of Financial Aid.

Because you are registering for the first time as a Gallatin student, the class search process will be two steps. In future terms, it will only be one.

Gallatin First Year Course Search

Learn more about the Gallatin First-Year Course Offerings and submit your preferences for the First-Year Interdisciplinary Seminar and the First-Year Writing Seminar.

After you receive information on your First-Year Course placement you can plan the rest of your schedule by using the course search on Albert. (You should begin looking at course options before you receive your course placement information.)

The Albert Course Search

Learn how to use the Albert course search function to find classes by watching the Albert Registration Tutorial (View section “14. Course Search Features”).

When viewing the search results, be sure to:

  • Write down the class number of each proposed course, as you will need it to register.
  • Make a note of courses that also require a permission number (not all courses require permission numbers) to register.
  • Read the departmental notes to determine if there are any course prerequisites or registration restrictions.

At Gallatin, we use the term “Plan of Study” in two different ways. Broadly, it refers to your concentration – the array of courses and other learning experiences that each Gallatin student shapes into an individualized program. Second, the Plan of Study is the form that you will complete prior to registration every semester. The form includes your adviser-approved course selections, and it reflects the conversations you have had with your adviser about your registration plans. The Plan of Study form is used by Gallatin’s Office of Student Services to lift your adviser hold on Albert and allow you to register for a given term at your appointment time.

After you submit your Plan of Study form, your adviser will receive an email inviting him or her to reply with his or her approval. Once your adviser's approval has been received, Gallatin's Office of Student Services will then remove your "Adviser Approval Required" hold so that you can register for your course selections on Albert anytime after your registration appointment time.

If your adviser approves a course selection that requires a permission number or special authorization to register, you should contact the department offering the course to determine:

  • if you are eligible to enroll
  • the steps to obtain a permission number, and/or other special registration authorization.

Please see the Cross School Study Guide for a list of schools and departments where Gallatin students may take courses. If you have trouble locating another department, contact Gallatin’s Office of Student Services for assistance.

The Registration Process

Students in Class

Before registration becomes available for the spring and fall semesters, the Office of the Registrar sets an enrollment appointment time for all undergraduate students. To confirm your registration appointment time, select the "Enrollment Date" tab in your Student Center on Albert.

After you finish enrolling you should confirm your registration by reviewing your final schedule. Be sure to correct all registration mistakes before the first day of classes to avoid financial penalties.

Although you are enrolled in courses, the registration process is not complete until you pay your bill and are "financially cleared". If you do not meet the payment deadline, your class reservations will be cancelled.

To ensure that you are officially registered, view your Bursar Account in the "Finances" section of your Student Center and make payment by the deadline. The NYU tuition payment deadlines are listed the Office of the Bursar's Website.

In addition to payment information, please review the following financial resources also found on the Office of the Bursar's Web site:

At the beginning of each term, the Gallatin Office of Student Services will start to send registration reminders to your NYU email account. It is important that you check your NYU email account on a regular basis to avoid missing out on these reminders and communication from other NYU Offices. (If you prefer to use a personal email account, you can still receive emails sent to your NYU account by using mail forwarding.)

You can also check the Gallatin Registration Calendar to remain informed of important deadlines throughout the semester.

If you have not yet received your registration adviser assignment, stop here!

After you have discussed your fall course options with your assigned registration adviser, submit the Plan of Study online!

Please do not submit this form until after you have discussed your course selections with your registration adviser. You will receive an email from Gallatin's Office of Student Services confirming that you have been cleared to register upon submission of your registration adviser's approval.

After you have reviewed the registration process, submitted your adviser-approved Plan of Study, and received an email from Gallatin's Office of Student Services confirming that you have been cleared to register, continue to Step 6: Looking Forward to Fall as you wait for your registration appointment time!
