Junior Awarded $10,000 Media Scholarship

Collective Bill Caspare Memorial Fund Scholarship Award Winner Named

Nikita Metharamani (BA ’17) is the inaugural winner of the 2015 Collective Bill Caspare Memorial Fund Scholarship. Established by Collective LLC, a leader in ad tech, and the 4A’s Foundation, the $10,000 scholarship is designed to support diversity in advertising and media in honor of the award’s namesake, former Senior Executive of Collective Bill Caspare. Metharamani received the award in a private ceremony at Collective’s New York City offices in December 2015.

The Gallatin junior heard about the scholarship from Gallatin faculty member Cynthia Allen while she was taking Allen’s course “Digital Art and New Media.” “That’s something I love about Gallatin,” says Metharamani. “Professors are invested in helping students find these kinds of opportunities. Cynthia really helped us by offering us information about new and emerging opportunities.”

A native of Great Neck, New York, Metharamani is also a first generation Indian American whose mother hails from the Philippines and whose father moved to the US from Calcutta for college. “My parents always taught me the importance of education and made a commitment early in their lives to provide me and my brother with everything we have,” she says. “I try to do my best in my work to honor what they have done for us.”

She credits building her portfolio for the application with work she completed while a media intern at Morgan Stanley. Her impressive range of skills as a photographer, designer, and writer led the scholarship committee to decide to name her as the sole scholarship recipient and to give her a larger award, rather than granting smaller awards to several winners as they had originally intended to do.

Collective’s COO Kerry Bianchi said, “Nikita represents the purpose of this fund: to spur greater diversity in digital media and marketing, and to reward students from all backgrounds who have found a passion for this industry.” Metharamani will use the funds to further her concentration which will bring together marketing, advertising, business strategy and new media studies.
