BA '13 - Visual Literacy

Francis transferred to Gallatin from NYU’s College of Arts and Science to study visual literacy and how viewers learn to read an image. “I’m interested in how the visual shapes identity and influences how people look at each other,” says Francis. He served as editor-at-large of the NYU’s daily student newspaper, Washington Square News, and assisted with the relaunch of the paper’s website. As a tutor with America Reads, Francis was assigned to assist an art teacher serving the third grade. He also worked with Writing Program Director June Foley, and as an intern and a writing tutor for Chinese students at the High School for Dual Language and Asian Studies. Gallatin’s interdisciplinary approach, he says, “propelled me to be more creative, to challenge existing frameworks and to create new connections. As a result, I am not only a more curious student but a more involved and engaged global citizen.”
