Gallatin Graduation FAQs

Graduation Celebrate

The Graduation Ceremony for the Gallatin School of Individualized Study will be held on Thursday, May 17, 2018, at Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall, located at 10 Lincoln Center Plaza on the corner of 65th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. The ceremony will run for approximately two hours.  

On the day of the ceremony, Gallatin staff, who will be dressed in black and wearing NYU badges, will be on hand to help with general questions, concerns, and to assist with seating. Please direct questions about ticketing to Gallatin staff at Gallatin’s Will Call. (Look for NYU Gallatin signs to the left of the front Box Office windows.)

Following is some important information for graduates and guests:


  • Student candidates, please arrive at David Geffen Hall at 5 pm. At check-in, you will receive your name card. Do not lose this card. After check-in, you will not be permitted to leave the check-in area. Candidates will process into David Geffen Hall together at 5:50 pm. The ceremony officially begins at 6 pm and will last approximately 2 hours.
  • All candidates must have a ticket to enter David Geffen Hall. Should you need a replacement candidate ticket, please direct your questions to Gallatin staff at Gallatin’s Will Call. (Look for NYU Gallatin signs to the left of the front Box Office windows.)


  • Academic attire is strongly suggested and must be rented prior to the day before the ceremony. All orders must be placed by April 11, 2017, on NYU's Commencement website. BA caps and gowns cost $53 and MA caps and gowns cost $73.
  • A representative will be on-site following the ceremony to pick up all attire.
  • If you elect to keep your attire after the ceremony, the last day to return rented attire to Kimmel is Friday, May 19.
  • After May 19, attire must be mailed to Herff Jones, to the following address: 1000 N. Market Street, Champaign, IL 61820, and specify ATTN: NYU Returns.


  • Island Photography will be taking photos of candidates as they cross the stage to shake the Dean’s hand. Graduates will receive free proofs directly from the photographer within a few weeks of graduation. Please direct all questions regarding this service to Island Photography by visiting or by calling 800-869-0908.


  • Avoid carrying a bag, other personal items, or umbrellas.
  • Please keep cell phones off throughout the duration of the ceremony.
  • Proper decorum and conduct are expected at all times. Inappropriate behavior may result in disciplinary action.
  • Please wear shoes that are comfortable as there will be many steps in the procession route as well as up, across, and down the stage.



  • Graduating students are responsible for obtaining tickets for their families and guests prior to the ceremony. Students should submit online ticket requests no earlier than April 1, 2017 at 10 am.
  • Tickets are general admission and do not correspond to specific seats. Seating is offered on a first-come, first-serve basis, so guests should plan to arrive on time.
  • All ticket-holding guests should plan to arrive by 5:30 pm at the latest.
  • All guests must have a ticket. Guests will NOT be granted entry to David Geffen Hall without one. Children under 2 will be admitted without ticket, but must sit on the lap of an adult, as each seat is spoken for. 
  • If a graduate needs to leave a ticket for a guest, the student may elect to do so before 5:30 pm by leaving the ticket with the Gallatin staff at Gallatin’s Will Call. (Look for NYU Gallatin signs to the left of the front Box Office windows.)

    Priority Seating

  • For guests with disabilities or for guests who may need extra time and assistance, please contact Monique Sorel-Dominguez at or 212-998-7380 with your request.
  • Doors will open to guests with disabilities or for guests who may need extra time at 5:15 pm; these guests may be accompanied by up to three other guests but no more.
  • Please note that there is limited seating in the lobby waiting area. Guests with disabilities or guests who may need extra time will be given space on a priority basis as it is available.


  • Parking is available near Lincoln Center and the Lincoln Center garage has three entrances, one on 62nd between Columbus and Amsterdam, a second on 63rd and Amsterdam, and a third on 65th between Amsterdam and Broadway. The price is $49.00 and advance reservations are recommended. Please call 212-721-6500 to reserve a spot.

    Other Considerations

  • David Geffen Hall has a small coat room for stroller and bag storage; these items must be checked prior to entering the theater.
  • Please inform guests that balloons are not allowed.
  • No outside food or beverages are permitted.


  • Directly following the Gallatin Graduation ceremony at 8 pm, there will be a brief cocktail reception on the Grand Promenade of David Geffen Hall. While this event is not mandatory, many Gallatin faculty and advisers will be on hand to meet and greet your families!
