Emelyn Chew

BA '14 - Economics, Political Theory, and Psychology

Emelyn, who came to Gallatin from Singapore, always considered herself an independent thinker, so the idea of having the freedom to direct her own academic path was an exciting prospect. Her course work at Gallatin, particularly Finance for Social Theorists, taught by Professor Peter Rajsingh, provided an interdisciplinary framework for contemporary themes in finance through the lens of economics, political theory and psychology. A second course, taught by Professor Robert Wosnitzer and entitled Cultures of Finance, explored the ways in which the culture of finance has informed the world culture at large. Emelyn studied in London the spring semester of her sophomore year, taking classes at the London School of Economics and at University College London. Her concentration was entitled The Financialization of Culture, with financialization referring to an economic system that attempts to reduce all value that is exchange into a financial instrument or a derivative. While still at Gallatin, Emelyn interned on a trading desk at J.P. Morgan within the Securitized Products Group during the end of her undergraduate study.
