Emma Kaywin (BA '10) came to Gallatin from Berkeley, California. She integrated continental philosophy, psychoanalysis, literature, sexuality and gender studies and horror/monster studies in her concentration, "The Philosophy of the Abnormal," which focused on ways that the normal/abnormal binary can be subverted. The tutorials and independent studies that contributed to her scholarship included a tutorial on madness with her adviser, Sara Murphy, and a tutorial on monsters with Patricia Lennox. "Because of my interrelated interests across disciplines," says Kaywin, "Gallatin has been wonderful for me, allowing me to study whatever I wanted and jump from discipline to discipline, making connections much more organically than I would have been able to do otherwise."
