Across Oceans of Law: The Komagata Maru and Jurisdiction in the Time of Empire
In “Across Oceans of Law,” the first talk in the 2017-2018 Ideas from the North Series, Renisa Mawani (University of British Columbia) follows the journey of the S.S. Komagata Maru, a British-built, Japanese-owned steamship frequently evoked as a key moment in the history of immigration exclusion and racism in Canada. Engaging “oceans as method”—a mode of thinking and writing that repositions land and sea—Mawani explores what is at stake when histories of Indian mobility, migration, and dispossession are situated within maritime worlds.
