Lisa Goldfarb is a scholar and teacher of comparative literature, with a specialization in modern poetry and poetics. Her interdisciplinary seminars include "Reading Poetry," "Wallace Stevens and the 20th Century," "Elizabeth Bishop: Form, Sight, and Sound," "Modern Poetry and the Actual World," and "The Music of Poetry and the Poetry of Music." Professor Goldfarb also teaches regularly in Gallatin's Writing Program ("Three Modern Essayists: Woolf, Orwell, Baldwin"). She is a recipient of Gallatin's Adviser of Distinction Award and NYU's Great Teacher Award. Her books, The Figure Concealed: Wallace Stevens, Music, and Valeryan Echoes (Liverpool UP, 2011) and Unexpected Affinities: Modern American Poetry and Symbolist Poetics (Liverpool UP, 2018), focus on the relationship between modern American and French poetry and poetics. In addition to her many journal articles on modern poetry, she is co-editor of three books, Wallace Stevens, New York, and Modernism (with Bart Eeckhout, Routledge, 2012), Poetry and Poetics after Wallace Stevens (with Bart Eeckhout, Bloomsbury 2017), and Wallace Stevens Poetry and France: 'Au pays de la metaphore' (with Juliette Utard and Bart Eeckhout, editions rue d'Ulm, ENS, 2018). Her most recent book, The Poetic Music of Wallace Stevens, was co-authored with Bart Eeckhout (Palgrave, 2022). Professor Goldfarb is President of the Wallace Stevens Society and Associate Editor of The Wallace Stevens Journal. She served as Associate Dean of Faculty and Academic Affairs from 2007 to 2014. Professor Goldfarb continues to teach part-time at Gallatin.

AWARDS AND HONORS

Goldfarb was awarded the NYU Center for the Humanities Research Fellowship for the academic year of 2020-2021.

PUBLICATIONS

Goldfarb co-authored the introduction, “Stevens into Music: An Interdisciplinary Conversation,” and contributed the article “Stevens and Stravinsky: Shared Aspects of a Musical Poetics,” in the co-edited journal issue “Wallace Stevens into Music – The Wallace Stevens Journal,” with Bart Eeckhout (vol. 43, Issue 2, Fall, 2019).

Goldfarb contributed the chapter “Music of the Sea: Elizabeth Bishop and Symbolist Poetics” in Elizabeth Bishop and the Music of Literature, edited by Angus Cleghorn (Palgrave/MacMillan, 2019, pgs. 19-29).

Goldfarb contributed the selection, “Walking with Stevens,” in the chapter, “The Bogliasco Seminars II: Experimental Transformations,” of The Wallace Stevens Journal  (forthcoming, Spring 2020).

In the Spring special issue of The Wallace Stevens Journal (Vol. 43, no. 1, Spring 2019), The Bogliasco Seminars: A Collective Reading of Neglected Poems, Professor Lisa Goldfarb contributed to all discussions and chapters, and introduced and moderated (with Tony Sharpe) discussions of “Lions in Sweden,” “Botanist on Alp (No. 1)” and “Botanist on Alp (No. 2)”.

Goldfarb, with Juliette Utard and Bart Eeckhout, co-edited Wallace Stevens in France: ‘Au pays de la métaphore’  (Éditions Rue d’Ulm, Presses del’École Normale Supérieur, 2018).

Goldfarb’s book, Unexpected Affinities: Modern American Poetry and Symbolist Poetics, was published in 2018 with Sussex Academic Press.

TALKS AND CONFERENCES

Professor Goldfarb and co-convener Bart Eechout hosted the “Yours Sincerely, Wallace Stevens” Conference with the Wallace Stevens Society at the Research Department of the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, where she presented the paper “Reading and Listening to Stevens’s Letters: ‘In the Delicatest Ear of the Mind,” on September 20, 2019. 

Goldfarb will co-edit two volumes of The Wallace Stevens Journal in which presentations will be collected (forthcoming, Fall, 2020, Spring, 2021).

Goldfarb conducted three poetry seminars titled, “Reading Elizabeth Bishop with Lisa Goldfarb,” at the 92nd St. Y in New York in April 2020.

Goldfarb will be a panelist at the Grolier Club in New York City to discuss the exhibit entitled Two American Poets: Wallace Stevens and William Carlos Williams, in February 2019.

The 92 Street Y’s programs on poetry will include three once-a-week evening seminars in April 2019 entitled “Reading Wallace Stevens with Lisa Goldfarb” as part of their offerings on poetry.

Goldfarb has co-organized the second Wallace Stevens Seminar at the Liguria Center for the Arts and Humanities in Bogliasco, Italy. She will present work at the gathering in June 2019.

Goldfarb delivered “‘The Phases of this Difference’: Jews, the Figure of the Rabbi, and Hebrew Texts in Wallace Stevens” in Stockholm, Sweden at a conference entitled “Wallace Stevens as World Literature” in May of 2018
