It’s the theatrical award season in New York City, and the work of Gallatin alumni and Gallatin’s theater company-in-residence have been recognized by the 69th Annual Tony Awards and the 60th Annual Drama Desk Awards.
Fun Home, produced by Barbara Whitman (BA ’88), won five Tony Awards: Best Musical; Best Direction of a Musical; Best Book for a Musical; Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical; and Best Original Score. An adaptation of the best-selling graphic memoir of the same name by Alison Bechdel, Fun Home is playing at Circle in the Square Theatre.
The Lyceum Theatre’s production of The Visit, starring Chita Rivera and produced by Tom Smedes (BA ’85), was nominated for five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and for a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical.
Michael J. Passaro (Tisch BFA ’84, GAL MA ’88) is the production stage manager for the Winter Garden Theatre production of Wolf Hall (Parts One & Two) which won a Tony Award for Best Costume Design of a Play and was nominated for eight Tonys, including Best Play. The play is an adaptation of the historical novels of the same name by Hilary Mantel that explore the court of King Henry VIII. Considered the premier ceremony honoring productions on Broadway, the Tony Awards was broadcast live on Sunday, June 7, 2015 from Radio City Music Hall.
Fiasco Theater, Gallatin’s theater company-in-residence, was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival of a Musical for their Roundabout Theater production of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s classic Into the Woods. The Drama Desk Awards is the only major competition to consider productions from Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off Broadway. The awards ceremony was held on May 31, 2015 at New York's Town Hall.
