Gallatin reasserts its position as anti-racist and repudiates violence against all people. We want to bring particular attention to the recent brutal attacks against Asians and Asian Americans in the United States over the past several months. Many cases have been reported in California, however, it is critical that we highlight the surge of criminal injustices that are taking place in New York and along the east coast, which target people of Asian descent.
Gallatin condemns these racist and violent incidents. It is important for us to understand the relationship between anti-Asian racism and the structural ways violence against people of color and immigrants take shape in this country. We ask that the community in and beyond Washington Square stand in solidarity with Asians and Asian Americans, to recognize the connections between these recent horrid acts and anti-Asian rhetoric and policy that have a long history in the United States, and to learn more about this history so that we can begin to address the safety and prosperity of the Asian community.
We appreciate and continue to learn from several NYU offices which have made public statements about this important issue, including the Asian/Pacific/American Institute (A/P/A) and the Office of Global Inclusion. They have published key resources and organized a number of events that will help educate the community.
