After graduating magna cum laude from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, with a BA in international studies, Kafia moved to New York to participate in AmeriCorps, working with City Year in New York. She completed more than 1,700 hours of national service through City Year, addressing the education crisis in the United States. She then worked as a project and events associate at the Diamond Empowerment Fund, an international nonprofit organization supporting education initiatives in diamond-producing countries in Africa.
