Mara de Gennaro specializes in 20th- and 21st-century literature and critical theory in English and French, with a focus on transnational modernism, postcolonial studies, and Black Francophone studies. She is the author of Modernism after Postcolonialism: Toward a Nonterritorial Comparative Literature (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2020), and is now at work on a translation and critical edition of Caribbean and Indian Ocean political essays on creolization, nativism, and state borders in the era of globalization. Her articles have appeared in Textual Practice, Comparative Literature Studies, Paideuma, differences, The Yale Journal of Criticism, and several essay collections, including Futures of Comparative Literature (Routledge, 2017). She has held faculty teaching appointments at Columbia, Duke, and Bucknell University, and research appointments as a Visiting Fellow of the Committee on Globalization and Social Change at the CUNY Graduate Center (2016-2018) and a Visiting Scholar at Columbia’s Institute for Comparative Literature and Society (2015-2016). Prior awards include an ICLS postdoctoral fellowship and an NEH summer research fellowship.

Mara de Gennaro presented “The Beauty of a Trembling World: Glissant, Chamoiseau, and the Poetics of Vulnerability,” at the Global South Forum held by the 2020 Modern Language Association Annual Convention in Seattle, Washington on January 10, 2020.
de Gennaro presented the paper “When the Walls Fall: Glissant and Chamoiseau in the Heat of Politics” at the American Comparative Literature Association in April 13.
de Gennaro was invited to talk at a panel discussion on Modernism at Columbia University’s Institute for Comparative Literature and Society on April 13, 2021.
