Rachel is a historian by training with a research focus on the intersections between U.S. imperial history, histories of economy, cultural history, and the production of scientific knowledge and expertise. Her dissertation, “Insuring Empire: U.S. Actuaries, Underwriters, and Statisticians in Latin America, 1894-1935” examines the role actuarial scientists and actuarial thinking played in “managing the risks” of American state and commercial expansion in Latin American during the early twentieth century. Rachel’s teaching interests are primarily in histories and theories of capitalism, the history of economic thought, and science and technology studies
