Conny Zhao is a multidisciplinary artist and ethnomusicologist originally from Knoxville, Tennessee. After graduating from the University of Tennessee with a degree in Music and Culture, she spent a year at Inner Mongolia Arts University in Hohhot, China as a Fulbright Creative and Performing Arts Fellow.

Conny’s Gallatin concentration threads together musical composition, vocal performance, theater, and multimedia arts to research and present the tradition of Mongolian long-song (urtyn duu). Her work explores how climate change, urbanization, and colonization in historically Mongol regions have impacted long-song singing styles, performance practices, and melodies, further examining the relationship between changing long-song traditions and Mongol identity. She is currently developing her artistic thesis, an immersive, multimedia musical that weaves together stories of the Mongol Empire’s queens.
