The field of fashion demands equal parts creativity and entrepreneurship—two skills that are synonymous with Gallatin. In support of our students' interest in fashion, each fall, the School names a prominent figure from the fashion world as the Guess Distinguished Visiting Chair in Fashion and Fashion Business and offers a Practicum in Fashion Business, taught by the visiting faculty member. In the spring, Gallatin hosts the student-run Gallatin Fashion Show—a signature event of the School which showcases the work of student designers and celebrates the interdisciplinary spirit of Gallatin. The show’s annual themes have explored eco and sustainable fashion design, the intersections of music and fashion, gender and fashion, and literature and fashion. In addition to these offerings, Gallatin’s Program in Global Fashion allows undergraduate students studying at NYU London and NYU Florence a comprehensive overview of British and Italian fashion, respectively, drawing inspiration from the rich cultures and histories of each hub of style.
There is also a student-run fashion magazine and blog, Embodied, that aims to address relevant issues of identity, self-esteem, and diversity while promoting an inclusive definition of beauty. Finally, check out this profile of Madeline DeJong. Besides studying fashion business, Madeline takes classes in marketing, advertising, and social media as well as French and Italian language courses. She's also on the NYU Vollebyal team.
The Gallatin School of Individualized Study received a $2.5 million gift from the Guess Foundation to establish the Guess Distinguished Visiting Professorship in Fashion and Fashion Business. The professorship, which began in the fall of 2012, is awarded to a distinguished practitioner with expertise in fashion, design or fashion business, or a scholar with expertise in the history of fashion or the fashion business. Gallatin offers the unique Program in Global Fashion during the fall and spring semesters to undergraduates at NYU London and NYU Florence, which guarantees spots in fashion courses including the History of British Fashion and History of Italian Fashion. For more information, please see the Program in Global Fashion page including program requirements. To apply, complete the relevant NYU Semester-Long Study Abroad Application, choose “Fashion,” and complete the supplemental essay.
The annual Gallatin Fashion Show has grown into one of Gallatin’s showcase events. Designers comprised of current students, alumni, and faculty along with visual artists debut their collections in front of a large, enthusiastic crowd each spring. You can view photo sets from past shows and view the latest videos of the show.
